Landscape format. Against a lime green painterly background, three straight wires running across a band in the top half of the painting, and almost parallel but tapering in slightly as they go right, are supporting 13 starlings who like the wires are rendered as silhouettes, with very soft barely perceptible but warming, red edges in places. The birds are in differing poses facing left, right, up or down. 5 birds are on the top wires, 7 on the middle wire, and one on the bottom wire. Signed bottom right: Liam Daly

Trumpets! It’s the return of Birds on Wires. But wait, something is different. Everything’s gone green. All the clocks say two o’clock. I don’t know which way is west.

Yes, it’s the latest in my very long running series of paintings of birds on wires. My favourite thing about them is that over the last 20 years people have confided in me, serious people who have bought Birds on Wires paintings, that they are more wires people than birds people. As in they prefer the paintings with more wires. And other people, equally serious people who have bought Birds on Wires paintings, have told me they are very much birds people who like less wires in their paintings.

The number 19 in the title does not relate to the number of birds, or indeed of wires, but to it being the 19th painting in the series – and that’s not even counting paintings like the rogue Birds on Branches. There isn’t a lot to say about it other than it does what it says on the tin. There isn’t a day in my life where I don’t look at birds on wires. One of the saddest days in my life was when the electricity people came and consolidated the four parallel wires that run past our house into big thick wire. So other than paint a singular Wood Pigeon I now have to walk down the fields to see these three wires and their perching Starling friends. It might not be obvious from this photograph but the edges of the birds and wires are softly flecked with red.

UPDATE: This painting is now SOLD.
