Landscape format. A painting of horizontal features. Across the bottom is a strip of orange grass punctuated lightly with yellow flowers. Beyond it are 3 strips of water separated by narrow maroon strips of rocks. Each body of water gets a darker shade of blue the further away it is. A headland comes out from the right edge halfway across the picture, and it, like a a headland on the far side of all the waters, is a series of horizontal colours of wine and greens, with the far one topped by graphical slivers of yellow and orange. Behind that is a sloping pale green hill on the left, and behind it a sliver of a very dark blue hill. Then, dominating the picture is the monolith of Benbulben, a curved rectangle coming out from the right almost all the way across the picture, with in the space to the left henind it the sharp peak of Benwiskin in pale blue rises up. The sky is a very pale turquoise. Signed Liam Daly.

I go to Sligo every year. And I’m convinced it’s the most underrated of the western counties. Not that it’s a competition – I can love Donegal, and Clare too. But I don’t understand why people don’t talk about Sligo more.

We all know Benbulben. We might even have a favourite view – as seen from the south or from the north. And some poet or other wrote about it. But Benwiskin has to be one of the most magnificent sights in Ireland, rising up like a giant wave ready to come crashing down on a beautiful corner of the country. So I painted it hidden behind Benbulben. The bays and peninsulas in Sligo are great, giving a myriad of wonderful views of those iconic mountains. I’ll attempt a painting of Benwiskin in all its glory another day but this is my take on the two mountains as seen from the south, with one peeping out behind the other.

UPDATE: This painting is now SOLD.

Notifications from all avenues are going slow tonight due to, well there’s a lot of them, so it may take me more time than I’d like to get to your message – but I will.

It’s fair to say that I’m very appreciative of likes and shares of this as they spread the news for me – but only if that makes you happy too.
