Painting in portrait format of stylized bronze statue of St Brendan and another monk in a tiny boat atop a grey stone plinth against a turquoise sky. The boat has curved spiral-ish wave bands attached to its side, and Brendan is standing up with his arms outstretched, the other monk sitting behind him. The bronze is rendered realistically in it bronze metal colour with green patches of patin, and some very dark shadows on underside of waves bands, and lenghtways pieces of 'wood' that curve up at front of boat, and along creases of the monks' robes. Signed bottom right: Liam Daly

A Kerryman, Saint Brendan the Navigator, has a great statue in west Cork. Down at the end of Wolfe Tone Square facing the daunting Atlantic Ocean – or well, Whiddy Island and Bantry Bay, he stands aloft in his little leather boat of bronze, up on a limestone plinth with his arms outstretched, afraid not of sea monsters or Celtic waves. I obviously like it very much, and have stared up at it quite a lot. I think the statue is by the sculptor Imogen Stuart, and I’m very happy with this painting of it – albeit not overly happy with the photo of my painting.
