Landscape format. Ink and watercolour painting of a very small single-storey white thatched cottage. It's not a typical cottage shape, more square with a front porch extended and all thatched. To the left inside a low stone wall is a great big tree with a fat trunk and no foliage but loads of thick dark spaghetti twisting branches. I've painted it in purples and greens and browns. The top of the wall is painted in alternating black and yellow rectangles. Stone pillars are on the right. The wall goes around the front and the left side. To the right is the beginning of a 2-storey grey stone house with violet slate roof and small tree with yellow foliage.

Oldtown up in very north County Dublin is great. There’s not a whole lot there. In terms of buildings that is. But there’s buckets of character. And luckily for me there was buckets of tea. I bought some in a kiosk by the pub down the lane. And then I bought some more, before cycling back. Then to the water pump where the road bends. The bend in the road being a feature I took to be the centre of Oldtown.

But I sat at the water pump with my paints because opposite was this tree and this house and how could you not? In the hours I was there only one person passed me. A nice old woman who had a brief chat, and then two hours later we continued our chat as she made her way back from somewhere to somewhere. There are a lot of thatched houses in rural north County Dublin, but this one was impossible to ignore thanks to the tree and that somebody had painted the wall all black and yellow because they were expecting me.

If you’d like to buy this painting then shout at me publicly and/or privately to make arrangements – which will be by bank transfer or cash. As ever I’m grateful for you sharing this with people who might like, let’s call it a village, or rural Dublin, or whopping wonderful trees.  But you don’t have to.
